First Visit
Establish a dental home by one year of age
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) all recommend establishing a dental home for your child by one year of age. A dental home is an on-going relationship between the dentist and patient, addressing all aspects of dental care. Children who have a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventative and routine oral health care.
We want your child to have a positive and enjoyable first visit. Our dentist and team will explain all procedures and answer any questions to help your child adjust to the dental setting. We recommend parents refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "shot", "hurt/pain", "pull out", "drill", or "blood". Our office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child.
We invite you to stay with your child during the initial examination. As your child gains more confidence and independence, we suggest you allow your child to accompany our staff through their dental appointments. We can establish a closer rapport with your child when you are not present.
However, if you choose, you are more than welcome to accompany your child to the treatment room. For the safety and privacy of all patients, we ask other family members who are not being treated remain in the reception room with a supervising adult.
